Novigrad in Istria, Croatia
Lying
on a limestone peninsular and actually an island until the 18th century,
Novigrad has a fascinating history.
It has been documented since 599 AD and examples of its historical architecture can still be seen.
This small and friendly town has an interesting harbour, a good selection of restaurants and cafes, a picturesque promenade around the city walls and, although there are no beaches, there are lots of places to swim.
To the north of the main town is a pretty park area shaded with pine trees. There is also a lido area here with tennis courts, pizzeria, deckchairs and parasols.
Places of interest nearby include Limski Gorge, a protected landscape and underwater reserve, and the Istrian thermal springs in the valley of River Mirna.
